Personal Statement
I am an Associate Professor of Physiology, and my research is focused on the molecular, structural and functional mechanisms regulating neuronal plasticity in physiological and pathological conditions. In particular, I am investigating: 1) the mechanisms underlying dendritic spine formation and turnover, which are crucial to all aspects of neuronal morphology and function, in cortex and in hippocampus in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, autism and other neurological diseases; 2) the role of glia (microglia and astrocytes) in the formation of synaptic contacts, axonal growth, neurogenesis, neurodegeneration, neoplastic growth and apoptosis.
I have a broad background in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo studies. As PI or co-Investigator I received research funding from Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, Italian Ministry of Health, University of Verona, and private foundations as Telethon-Italy, Fondazione Cariverona-Italy, Fondazione Fibrosi Cistica-Italy, and Alzheimer’s Association-US. In summary, I have the expertise, leadership, training, expertise and motivation necessary to collaborate on the proposed research project.
