Biography
Paula Ferreira is an Associate Professor at the Department of Production and Systems, School of Engineering, University of Minho, and a Researcher at the ALGORITMI Research Centre. She holds a PhD in Production Engineering and Systems (University of Minho), an MSc in Finance (University of Porto), and a Graduation in Chemical Engineering (University of Porto).
Since October 2024 she is the Director of the ALGORITMI Research Centre.
She was coordinator of the Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) research group at ALGORITMI between 2021 and 2024. Additionally, she was the director of the Doctoral Program on Industrial Engineering and Systems from 2019 to 2024 and served as deputy director of the Department of Production and Systems from April 2017 to April 2021. Since 2021, she has been representing the University of Minho at the Board of Laboratorio da Paisagem, an institution coordinated by Guimarães’ City Council, as Vice-President.
Her research interests primarily lie in energy planning, socio-economic impact assessment of industrial and energy systems, risk analysis, and project evaluation in alignment with sustainable development goals. She has led and participated in several national and international research projects in these areas, funded by FCT and the European Commission.
She has supervised or co-supervised 14 national and international PhD students (8 concluded and 6 ongoing) and more than 40 MSc students (concluded). She has also served on the evaluation committees for 19 PhD theses in various countries, including Portugal, Brazil, Denmark, Algeria, Spain, Colombia, Australia, and India.
She is the author of over 90 papers published in international journals and book chapters, most of which are in Q1 journals indexed in SCOPUS/WoS, totaling more than 180 publications.
Co-founder of ICEE - International Conference on Energy & Environment, chairing the 2015, 2019, and 2024 editions hold at the University of Minho. The conference attracts 100+ international participants every two years and results in special issues in renowned journal.
She has been appointed as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the ENERGY Journal (Elsevier) in January 2024, and she has also been serving as a subject editor for Economy and Environment since 2017. Additionally, she is a member of the Editorial Board of several other international journals, including The International Journal of Sustainable Energy Planning, AIMS Energy, AIMS Environmental Science, Smart Energy (Elsevier) and Electricity (MDPI). She has also edited 8 special issues for international journals such as Energy, Environment Development & Sustainability, and the International Journal of Sustainable Energy Planning, in collaboration with colleagues from national and international research institutions.
