I am Portuguese musicologist and my research is focused on popular music in Portugal from the late nineteenth century onwards and how it was associated to the symbolic construction of a nation. The main aspect of my work is the analysis and contextualisation of cultural artefacts and their association with the changing market. To produce this sort of holistic study of cultural spheres I am developing a transdisciplinary approach to cultural materials, integrating them by using several types of sources and methodologies. My interests range through various disciplines. Although the main focus of my current research are music cultures of the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries, I also have interests in musics from the early Romanticism onwards and on popular music in general. Other of my interests are cultural theory, theories of narrative, theories and technologies of memory, historiography, sociology, philosophy, psychoanalysis, and cultural geography.
