Biography

I am Dr Sam Martin (she/her) - a Digital Sociologist and Social Data Scientist - I have 10+ years of expertise in using creative digital methods to analyse Big Social Data in the fields of digital epidemiology and digital public and global health. I am a Senior Research Fellow at University College London’s RREAL (Rapid Research And Evaluation Lab) - where I lead the Big Qualitative Data workstream in utilising Big Qual methods to conduct rapid qualitative research into public health topics of concern, such as Vaccine Hesitancy, Long Covid, Misinformation, creative Big Qualitative methodologies, Process Mapping, the mental health of Healthcare workers during the Covid-19 pandemic, UK Public Healthcare delivery and Patient Safety, as well as investigates the impact of complex health emergencies.

I run Generative AI workshops in prompt engineering for public health research, mental health art therapy, and sentiment analysis. I am one of the founders of the LISTEN method - together with my colleagues on the LISTEN project, where we utilise digital methods and tools to analyse big qualitative data using collaborative discussions. more here: https://bit.ly/m/RREAL-LISTEN

I am also Digital Analytics consultant at the Oxford Vaccine Group and Ethox Centre, where I use creative Big Qualitative methods to investigate social media representations of Vaccine Hesitancy, Misinformation and Disinformation. I have also been Digital Analytics Lead at the Vaccine Confidence Project (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine), where I used machine learning and sentiment analysis to research the nuances of sentiment in vaccine confidence discourse across the global diaspora.

I am also an emerging AI Digital artist, who has been utilising the power of AI to disrupt the art space with positive images of black and brown people in culturally representative art. Most recently I have been interviewed on the BlackGirlNerds podcast about the important role that AI art can play in communicating positive themes for mental health to marginalised communities: https://blackgirlnerds.com/podcast-understanding-ai-and-data-science-with-dr-sam-martin-and-malik-afegbua/
