Biography

NGUYEN Gia Minh Thao obtained the B.Eng. (honors) and M.Eng. (first class) degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HCMUT – ĐH Bách Khoa TpHCM) in 2009 and 2011, respectively. He obtained a Dr.Eng. degree in Electrical Engineering and Intelligent Control from Waseda University, Japan in 2015, with a full Japanese scholarship.

Prof. Thao has good experience and skills in teaching and research guidance of both undergraduate and graduate levels. From 2010 to 2012, he was a University Lecturer at the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, HCMUT, Vietnam. From 2015 to 2020, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Waseda University and Toyota Technological Institute, Japan. From 2020 to 2023, he was an Assistant Professor in Nagoya University and Toyota Technological Institute, Japan. Since 2023, he has been currently an Associate Professor in Shimane University, Japan, where he is the principal investigator and head of the Electric Motors and Energy Systems Laboratory (EMES Lab, consisting of 4 undergraduate B3, 6 undergraduate B4, 4 master, and 1 incoming PhD students).

His research interests and expertise in both simulation and experiment include: Electric motors & drive systems, SiC/GaN power electronics & converters, Intelligent control (fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks), Hybrid control design, Disturbance observers, Electromagnetic characterization, High-frequency magnetics, Photovoltaic & wind power systems, Hybrid energy management systems, Battery management systems, AI/machine learning (convolution neural networks, interval fuzzy model), Finite element analysis, and Electric vehicles.

Prof. Thao has published 30 refereed Journal articles (& other 2 submitted journal manuscripts under review), 54 refereed international Conference papers (& other 2 submitted IEEE conference manuscripts under review), 3 Book chapters in Springer Nature and IET Books, 1 exclusive Patent, and many domestic conference presentations in the above research fields.

He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, Committee member of Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE) Chugoku branch, technical Committee member of Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan (IEEJ), and member of Asian Control Association (ACA), and Vietnamese Academic Network in Japan (VANJ). He is also a co-admin of Vietnam Power Electronics Community (VPEC). Prof. Thao received the "Best Paper Award" of ASEAN Symposium on Automatic Control 2011, "Excellent Oral Presentation" of the 2015 7th International Conference on Computer Research and Development, "Excellent Paper Award" of the 2020 23rd IEEE International Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems, and "Certificate of Outstanding Contribution in Reviewing" of International Journal of Hydrogen Energy in 2017 and IEEE ISEE 2021.

He is currently an Associate Editor of the IEEE Industry Applications Society – Industrial Automation and Control Committee. He is also an active Associate Editor of IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INDUSTRY APPLICATIONS and IEEE Industry Applications Magazine, a Guest Editor of ELECTRONICS and IET The Journal of Engineering, a Review Editor of Frontiers in Electronics, and an Editorial Board member of Journal of Computer Science and Cybernetics.

Additionally, he is an experienced Reviewer for 11 refereed IEEE Transactions/journals, 3 refereed journals of IET, more than other 15 Web of Science (WoS)-indexed journals, and many IEEE-sponsored international conferences.
