Dr. Omidian earned his Ph.D. in Polymer Science (1997) from Brunel University (UK), and obtained his M.Sc. and B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Tehran Polytechnic (Iran) in 1990 and 1987, respectively. He has served in both academia and industry for almost 30 years at different positions including head of the department, assistant professor, editor and lecturer in Iran Polymer Institute and Iran University Press. He joined Purdue University in 2001, and pursued his postdoctoral fellowship with Prof. Kinam Park in the Department of Industrial and Physical Pharmacy (IPPH). He joined industry in 2002, and served as senior research scientist, research manager, and principal scientist at Kos Pharmaceuticals and Abbott Laboratories, where he has been principal investigator of a number of product development projects in the area of gastric retention drug delivery systems, and diet aid.
Dr. Omidian is holding 3 issued US patents, over 30 US and World patent applications, and 16 Invention Disclosures in the area of hydrogels and abuse-deterrent medications. He is an author/co-author of 73 peer-reviewed publications, over 100 conference presentations, and 20 book chapters and books. He has received major awards from different organizations including “outstanding teacher”, “outstanding research paper”, “best research paper”, “outstanding researcher”, and “outstanding research project”. He's been a three-time nominee and one-time winner of the Golden Apple Award for his teaching excellence.
Dr. Omidian has received multiple grants to continue his research on abuse-deterrent pharmaceutical dosage forms, oral gastric retention technologies, and developing compositions to reduce alcohol absorption in the systemic circulation. He is also collaborating with the college of Dental Medicine to develop new tissue engineering scaffolds. Dr. Omidian is a regular reviewer of many peer-reviewed journals in the area of polymers and pharmaceutical sciences. He is a past or current member of “American Chemical Society”, “Controlled Release Society”, and “American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists”.
Dr. Omidian is currently a Professor at NSU’s College of Pharmacy, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Bioactive and Compatible Polymers. He is currently teaching and coordinating several core and elective courses in the professional PharmD/graduate PhD programs, and supervising two graduate students in the pharmaceutics track. He is also representing the NSU’s College of Pharmacy at the United States Pharmacopeia Conventions (USP).
