Biography
Graduated with Medical Doctor degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), PG-diploma in Applied Parasitology & Entomology from SEAMEO-TROPMED Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Master of Science in Public Health from National University of Singapore and PhD in Medical Parasitology from UKM. Registered Public Health Physician with National Specialist Registry, Malaysian Medical Council, sub-specialising in Infectious Disease Epidemiology. An elected Fellow of Academy of Medicine Malaysia, Academy of Medicine Singapore and Academy of Science Malaysia. Currently a Professor of Public Health at Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Director of Institute for Research, Development and Innovation (IRDI) and Deputy Vice Chancellor Research, International Medical university.
Was the Past-President of the College of Public Health Medicine, Academy of Medicine Malaysia. Awarded the Honorary Fellow of the Malaysian College of Primary Care Physician and Honorary Member of the Malaysian Nutrition Society.
Had served the Ministry of Health for 32 years including 18 years as medical researcher at the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) Kuala Lumpur before serving as Director of Disease Control Division and later as Deputy Director General of Health (Public Health) from 2011 until optional retirement in July 2017. Represented Malaysia in various health multilateral development and policy forums such as World Health Assembly, United Nation General Assembly, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, OIC Islamic Health Ministers Meeting, ASEAN Health Ministers Meeting, and the WHO Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC). Had served in various SEAMEO-TROPMED and WHO Consultancy positions and recently completed a two-terms membership of the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework Advisory Group, WHO, Geneva (2017-2019;2020-2022). He has published 93 publications in scientific journals and has been invited to speak in 65 local, regional and international conferences.
