Biography
Professor Emilia Entcheva is a biomedical scientist and engineer. She directs the Cardiac Optogenetics & Optical Imaging Laboratory (at George Washington University, Washington DC) focused on advancement of personalized medicine by innovative engineering. We combine biophotonics tools (optogenetics-based actuation and advanced optical mapping) with stem-cell-derived cardiomyocyte technology, tissue engineering and gene-modulation approaches (CRISPRi/CRISPRa) to design novel massively parallel platforms for high-throughput functional screening in human patient-derived cells. Machine learning (AI) is applied to capture key biophysical signatures in the diverse human cell responses and build better population-and patient-specific predictors of drug action. All-optical electrophysiology and computation are used for real-time feedback control of complex biological processes. Our work is funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
