Biography
Prof. Oľga Zápotočná, PhD. graduated in psychology at the Faculty of Arts, Comenius University in Bratislava in 1980. In 1980-1990 she worked at the Institute of Experimental Psychology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, where she (in 1988)
obtained her doctoral degree in the field of research on neuropsychological organization of cognitive functions related to reading. Since 1990 she has been an independent researcher at the Institute for Research in Social Communication of SAS at present as the head of the Centre for Educational Research. Since 1997 she has been working as university teacher. Until 2005 at the Faculty of Education Comenius University in Bratislava, where she received the degree of associate professor in educational psychology. In 2017 she has reached the academic rank of professor at the Trnava University in Trnava, where she currently works as a full professor of Education at the Faculty of Education. In her teaching, she lectures on developmental psychology, psychology of reading, and specifically she conducts courses on early literacy development and education. Currently, she supervises the Bachelor's degree program in Preschool and Elementary Pedagogy and the Master's degree program me in Teaching for Primary Education. She is a co-author of the new National curriculum for pre-primary education and the main author of the educational area "Language and Communication".
As part of her scientific and publishing activities, she deals with the issues of reading and literacy research. She has been involved in a number of research projects exploring literacy from developmental and educational perspective in wider social and cultural contexts. Among the international projects, e.g. Early Literacy Assessment Project (EU: COMENIUS SOCRATES, 2.1, Ref. 94314-CP-1-2001-1-UK) in collaboration with the Institute of Education, University of London. She was a member of the management committee of the international COST project Action IS 1404: Evolution of Reading in the Age of Digitization (E-Read, 2014-2017). In the past she was an active member of the International Development in Europe Committee (IDEC) of International Reading Association as the president of Slovak Reading Association, at presence a member of Federation of European Literacy Associations (FELA). Since 2021 she is the principal investigator of an interdisciplinary research project aimed at the study on “Effective reading and media behaviour strategies: Semi longitudinal study at key stages of literacy development using the eye-tracking methodology” granted by APVV (Slovak Research and Development Agency), carried out in collaboration with the Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Arts, Comenius University Bratislava.
