Biography
Arsenio M Fialho received his BS in Biology from the Faculty of Biology, University of Lisbon, Portugal and his PhD in Biotechnology from Instituto Superior Tecnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, in 1986 and 1996, respectively. He carried out post-doctoral studies at Atelier de BioInformatique of the Université Pierre et Marie Curie-Paris 6, France (2004) and Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology of the University of Illinois, Chicago, US (2005) and Invited Professor at the Surgical Oncology Dept. at UIC, Chicago, US (2005). In 2011 he received his Habilitation in Biotechnology from IST. He is presently a Professor at the Bioengineering Department, IST and the Coordinateur of the pedagogical and scientific area of Biological Sciences. He is also Vice-director (2023-26) of the Institute of Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), member of the associate laboratory "Institute for Health and Bioeconomy (i4HB)". His teaching and research interests are in the field of Molecular and Cellular Microbiology.
His current research interests in the area of Molecular and Cellular Microbiology center on the studies of pathogenic bacteria on two different fronts: i) study the phenomena of bacterial adhesion to host cells and its significance in pathogenesis; ii) use pathogenic bacteria as reservoirs of potential therapeutic products to treat various types of cancer.
