Jose Luis Chiara is a Senior Research Scientist at IQOG-CSIC. He obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 1988 at the University of Seville (Spain) and joined CSIC in 1992. He has been a visiting scientist at the University of Lund (Sweden), the University of Montreal (Canada), and North Carolina State University (USA). He has authored over 80 journal articles and book chapters, including 6 encyclopedia contributions, holds 5 patents (one licensed), and has supervised >30 MSc, PhD, and postdoctoral students. He has served as Secretary (2002-2004), Vice-president (2004-2006), and President (2006-2008) of the Group of Carbohydrate Chemistry of the Royal Chemical Society of Spain, as Scientific Representative in the Committee for Scientific Information Policy of CSIC (2011-2012), as Member of the Chemistry Area Commission of CSIC (2017-2018), and as member of the organizing committee of 2 international scientific meetings and 1 national meeting (as President). He has participated in >20 public-funded research projects and 9 research contracts with multinational companies. He regularly acts as reviewer for several regional, national and international funding agencies, and >20 scientific journals in the fields of multidisciplinary chemistry, organic and bioorganic chemistry, catalysis, and materials science. His research lines have evolved over the years from physical organic chemistry, natural products synthesis, and glycochemistry and glycobiology, to the design and synthesis of novel fluorescent molecules and functional nanomaterials for photonic and biomedical applications.
