Idupulapati M. Rao is a Plant Nutritionist and Physiologist at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Cali, Colombia since 1989. He obtained his education in India and received his Postdoctoral training from 1981 to 1989 in USA (University of Illinois; University of California). He has been working on physiological aspects of abiotic stress adaptation in tropical forages. He has extensive experience in stress physiology of tropical forage plants particularly to nutrients and water. He has contributed to the identification and development of tropical forage genotypes that are adapted to low fertility soils and drought in the tropics. These genotypes are an integral part of the sustainable crop-livestock systems in the tropics. He is the author or co-author of over 170 refereed journal articles, 60 book chapters, 65 articles in conference proceedings, 260 oral or poster summaries and co-edited 3 books. He has contributed to the capacity building of Ph.D. (16), masters (9) and undergraduate degree (15) students registered in the Universities of Germany, USA, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, Spain and Colombia. He participated as PI or co-PI of 40 research projects funded by different donors.
