Biography

Juan Carlos Torres Zafra obtained his MS degree in Industrial Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, in 2001, and later earned his PhD in Electrical, Electronic, and Automatic Engineering from Carlos III University of Madrid in 2009. Upon joining the Displays and Photonics Applications (GDAF) group at the University Carlos III of Madrid, his research focused primarily on liquid crystal technology.

He conducted studies to determine equivalent electrical circuit parameters in Antiferroelectric Liquid Crystal (AFLC) and V-SHAPE devices. Exploring non-photonic applications in liquid crystal devices, he proposed innovative electrical circuits, leveraging the variation of liquid crystal capacitance in response to the applied voltage. His research extended to nanoparticle-doped liquid crystals, altering their electrical properties for the design of new sensors.

Furthermore, he actively contributed to GDAF's initiative for designing technical aids for individuals with disabilities, particularly those with visual impairment, by researching and implementing stereoscopic image processing algorithms in see-through glasses.

Currently, he leads the Visible Light Communications (VLC) project, focusing on electro-optical characterization, LED bandwidth improvement, and designing new drivers for a high-power visible light transmission method.
