Biography

Professor Lisa French is Dean of the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University in Melbourne. This is the second largest university in Australia and the School is one of the largest at RMIT. She has published extensively on media and cinema, particularly in relation to gender and Australian cinema. Her most recent book for Palgrave Macmillan is 'The Female Gaze in Documentary Film – An International Perspective' (2021). Other books include the co-authored 'Shining a Light: 50 Years of the Australian Film Institute' (2009 & 2014) and the anthology 'Womenvision: Women and the Moving Image in Australia' (2003). She has produced several documentary films that have been broadcast or screened at festivals in Australia and internationally (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm6007115/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 ). Her professional history includes three years as the Director of the prestigious St Kilda Film Festival and nine years as a Director of the Australian Film Institute. She was the Chair of the 2016 ‘Screen Futures’ International conference and is a member of the Editorial Board of 'The Conversation'. Currently she is the co-chair of a UNESCO 19 global university research network for Gender, Media & ICTs (http://www.unitwin.net ) and she sits on the Australian Federal Government’s Screen Australia ‘Gender Matters Task Force’ (https://www.screenaustralia.gov.au/sa/new-directions/gender-matters ). Her other industry service includes shaping Film Victoria's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategy. She is on the Editorial Board of The Conversation and a member of the City of Melbourne Arts and Culture Committee.
Her current research includes an international gender project funded by UNESCO. Her research has been translated into French, Spanish and Korean.
