Biography

Dr. Robert Wagner is the Director of the Fuels, Engines, and Emissions Research Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; a faculty member of the Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville; and a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). His responsibilities include the coordination and development of strategic internal and external collaborations at ORNL to better support the mission of the United States Department of Energy (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office. Dr. Wagner has been principal investigator on many research activities spanning low temperature combustion, unstable combustion fundamentals, nonlinear controls, thermodynamics, renewable fuels, and emissions characterization. This includes the integration of ORNL expertise in high performance computing, neutron sciences, material sciences, and advanced manufacturing to accelerate the development of advanced transportation technologies. Dr. Wagner is on the editorial board of four international journals, on executive committees for ASME and SAE, and has authored more than 100 technical publications. He is also the recipient of ASME Internal Combustion Engine Award (2014) and the SAE International Leadership Citation (2014). AWARDS Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) – “Recognized for innovative research in advanced combustion concepts, unstable combustion phenomena, and the scaling and harmonization of high-efficiency combustion concepts to application.” (2016) ORNL Significant Event Award for supporting the organization of the transportation team and participating in the design and assembly on an Additive Manufacturing Integrated Energy (AMIE) Demonstration Project. AMIE was unveiled during the DOE’s EERE Industry Day which was hosted at ORNL (2015) ORNL Significant Event Award for leadership of transportation team in the design and construction of an additive manufactured 3D Shelby Cobra replica which was recognized by President Obama and DOE Secretary Moniz (2015) ORNL Awards Night Research Leadership at the Group Level Award (2014) American Society of Mechanical Engineers Internal Combustion Engine Award for distinguished contribution over a substantial period of time (2014) Society of Automotive Engineers International Leadership Citation for outstanding accomplishments which have led to the success of the SAE’s global initiatives (2014) Invited attendee of the 2013 NAE Global Grand Challenges Summit sponsored by the National Academy of Engineering, China Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Academy of Engineering in London, England (2013) Fellow of Society of Automotive Engineers – “Recognized for distinctive contributions in the area of combustion stability fundamentals and the application of low temperature combustion to multi-cylinder engines” (2012) ORNL Significant Event Award for successful leadership of six year effort to demonstrate DOE fuel efficiency and emissions goals for light-duty diesel engines (2011) Invited attendee of 2011 NAE China-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium sponsored by the National Academy of Engineering (2011) Society of Automotive Engineers Forest R.
