Biography

Bagher Larijani is a Professor of Endocrinology and Director of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research center of Endocrinology and Metabolism Research institute (EMRI) of Tehran University of Medical Science (TUMS). During the past two decades, his main focus at the institute has been bridging the gap between basic and clinical research in endocrinology, with a particular focus on diabetes and other non-communicable diseases. Moreover, a great number of very competent endocrinologists and researchers have been trained at the Institute.

Accordingly, he is rightfully hailed as the father of multidisciplinary approach to endocrinology in Iran. However, during the past year, he has focused his research principally on calculation of national burden of Covid-19 and other related projects.

Dr. Larijani has authored numerous academic articles, and, according to Google Scholar, globally, he is considered as one of the most highly cited authors in the field of endocrinology (with an h-index of 91). In an international level, Dr. Larijani serves as a commissioner of the Lancet Commission on Obesity and holds several advisory positions at the WHO, IOF, IDF, and other international institutions. Considering his unparalleled achievements in an international scale, in 2020, he was awarded the most prestigious international award of the American Academy Clinical Endocrinologists, the AACE International Clinician Award.

Dr. Larijani is also proactively and directly involved in different levels of clinical service delivery, and serves the community as a practicing endocrinologist. As for clinical service delivery, in collaboration with NGOs, Dr. Larijani has founded the first multidisciplinary diabetes subspecialty clinic in Iran. This cutting-edge multidisciplinary clinic is consisted of virtually all services required for comprehensive approach to diabetes care such as nutrition, ophthalmology, psychiatry, podiatry, Doppler sonography, and outpatient offloading procedures for diabetic foot.
