Biography

I research the structure and function of spider and other insect silks at multiple scales, i.e. from their genes and gene expression to nano properties to protein and bulk fibre properties. My lab has initiated experiments to produce silk proteins synthetically and we are developing spinning methodologies with an eye to creating silk-based products. I am also academically interested in the mechanisms and consequences of animal colouration, and using all kinds of advanced techniques to understand structure, function and ecologies of animals.
