Biography

Professor Reuben Dlamini is a scholar and an information and engineering technology practitioner with more than twenty years of experience as a programming, digitalisation, education technology and learning analytics expert. He is currently an Associate Professor in Educational Information and Engineering Technology at the Wits School of Education. His research focus cuts across multiple disciplines Computer Science, IT and Education, and involves implementation and evaluation of complex digitalization initiatives, and pedagogical integration of ICT interventions in education to improve access to quality education and reduce educational inequalities. Prof. Dlamini has been at the forefront of strategic ICT initiatives that promote educational equity and digital inclusion across South Africa.

Through intersectional lens (access and inclusion), Professor Dlamini has authored and co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and conference proceedings, worked as PI/co-PI on more than 5 research projects and co-authored/edited 3 books. These research projects focuses on expanding classroom boundaries and educational opportunities to eradicate any form of inequalities among historically underrepresented, underserved and marginalized populace. Prof. Reuben Dlamini’s expertise and research focus is on Cognitive Systems Design & Development, the Internet of Things, Digital Inclusion, Technological Innovations in Education, Socio-Technical Architecture, Social Computing and Human Computer Interaction. He also serves as the Academic Head: Science and Technology and serves in the University Senate ICT Reference Group and Academic Planning and Development Committee (APDC) Short Courses Sub-Committee.

The APDC Sub-Committee considers proposals for new academic developments after they have been developed collaboratively by the School and the Academic Planning Office and considered by the faculty boards. While the University Senate ICT Reference Group act as a Strategic ICT Board and Senate policies for the operation and strategic development of Information and Communication Technology in teaching-and-learning and research. Also advises in all matters of policy relating to ICT that are of academic significance and assists with the formulation and implementation of the ICT plan. The Committee also receives reports from the Faculty ICT Committees and provides advice and a discussion space to ensure that the University achieve as much synergy as possible among its various activities with regard to ICT across all areas of the University. As a leader in the University Professor Dlamini pursue impactful research intersecting technology, pedagogy and education through rigorous exploration of various technologies to inform instructional practices, policies and inclusive professional development opportunities.

Prior to joining Wits University worked as an Academic Technology Consultant at the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA. Prof. Dlamini was educated in the USA, earned a Dual Degree in Computer Science and Mathematics at Wilberforce University, Master’s in Engineering and Management with a major in Information Technology at Case Western Reserve University and a PhD in Instructional Systems Design & Technology at Ohio University.
