Main research interests include the mechanisms underlying myocardial hypertrophy and progression to heart failure, as well as, the pathophysiology of diastolic dysfunction, using a bench-to-bedside approach and back.
Awarded over the last fifteen years with 33 research grants (total funding: 3,000,000 € granted from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, European Union FP7, Portuguese Society of Cardiology, Portuguese Academy of Medicine and Portuguese Ministry of Health) and 98 scientific prizes from the Portuguese Societies of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, General Surgery and Diabetes, European Society of Cardiology and Portuguese Academy of Medicine.
To date published 234 full-papers and 519 abstracts in peer review journals.
Supervisor of 7 post-docs, 27 PhD students and 30 MSc students.
