Biography
RESEARCH, KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER AND EXCHANGE ACTIVITIES
Trajectory
After completing my doctoral thesis (1993) with Prof. Casar-Corredera (UPM) in the field of beam management for multifunction radars and participating as a project engineer in the design of a multifunction radar (Siemens/Plesey, Inisel), I moved definitively in 1991 to the ETSIT of the University of Valladolid, a newly created school.
Starting from scratch, I created a research group with the students of the first promotion and in 1998 I set up the Array Processing Group.
Since 2017 I am part of and currently coordinate a multidisciplinary research group with researchers from ETSI Industriales (structural analysis), ETSI de Arquitectura (cultural heritage in wooden buildings) and ETSI Agrarios (Entomology and Forestry).
I have been responsible for generating new lines of research in the area of signal processing in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences of the Universidad Austral de Chile.
Scientific Contributions
I have authored 24 articles in journals with impact index in the field of array processing with real-time transducers. Specifically, I have 15 journals indexed in JCR, mostly Q1 and 9 journals indexed in SJR.
In addition, I have authored 8 papers in non-indexed peer-reviewed journals, 60 contributions in international conferences, 20 in national conferences and 4 book chapters.
My H-index (Scopus) is h 10 and I have 295 citations.
I have created a research group where I applied my knowledge and research developed at UPM to the field of acoustic band microphone and speaker arrays with two clear objectives: 1) to design and build real arrays that work in real time with a significant number of sensors and 2) to develop new applications based on these systems.
The main milestones I have developed have been:
Milestone 1: The use of electronic scanning techniques applied to acoustic band arrays for detection and tracking. 2 JCR publications
Milestone 2: The original contribution of a biometric system based on an active acoustic transducer array with Machine learning techniques. 7 JCR publications
Milestone 3: The conception and development of a scalable and reconfigurable FPGA-based architecture for developing MEMS transducer array-based applications. 1 JCR Publication
Milestone 4: The application of the developed architecture to multiple areas: Monitoring of patients (assisted living), Localisation of distress signals from a drone (Rescue) and pedestrian detection for in-vehicle AEB systems. 3 JCR publications
Milestone 5: The conception and development of a scalable architecture for structural health monitoring systems in buildings using MEMs accelerometer networks in active cooperation with the Architecture and Industrial research groups. 2 JCR publications
Milestone 6: Application to forestry in the field of heritage conservation, specifically in the detection, localisation and classification of wood-eating insects using highly sensitive acoustic arrays. 1 JCR publication
Contributions to Society
I have participated in a total of 15 international, national, regional and university research projects, of which I have been PI in 9 projects. Among them, 2 international projects (PCI-AECI) and CONYCIT (Chile); 2 projects of the national plan (Investigacion orientada y Retos), 9 regional projects (Junta de castilla y León) and 3 university projects (Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca). The value of the funding obtained has been 122,000 as PI and 368,000 € as Researcher.
I have participated in 19 contracts as project manager for a value of 285,000 € and in 10 contracts as member for a value of 1,000,000 €.
I would highlight the contract with the company CAV in Mexico, entitled "Integral project of specialised intervention for the rescue and safeguarding of the murals of the SCOP centre" by O'Gorman and Pintado, using the mosaic technique, which form part of the heritage. They have been monitored in real time with the technology developed by my team in the demolition phase of the SCOP centre. Being a clear example of technology transfer
I am the author of 3 patents, two of which are in operation, and 3 utility registrations.
Collaboration with other research groups
I have collaborated with the following professors and researchers Walter Grobe from Universidad Federico Santa Maria (Chile) on WSN networks, Anibal Figueiras-Vidal from UCM on Machine Learning, Abedellah Touhafi from ETRO group / Free University of Brussels (VUB) on MEMS array design , Sebastian Scherer from Carnegie Mellon University on acoustic arrays in rescue drones, Christian Lazo from UACH in Chile on acoustic arrays, Michael Vorlander from the Institute of Technical Acoustics RWTH Aachen University on acoustic person modelling and Macarena Varela from Fraunhofer FKIE on drone-based cry for help detection.
Finally, I have been a founding member and head of the m
Finally, the second six-year research period and the first six-year technology transfer period have been achieved.
