Biography
Andrea Monroy-Licht, Dr. in Environmental Toxicology, holding a Master's degree in Environmental Management and a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. My research interests primarily focus on Environmental Biotechnology, specifically in the field of Bioremediation. I am committed to exploring the potential applications of biosolids generated in wastewater treatment and utilizing biological methods to treat environmental pollutants. Additionally, I am interested in studying the interaction between plants and microorganisms in environmental processes.
Currently, my primary focus is on phytoremediation, addressing organic, inorganic, emergent pollutants, and heavy metals—especially mercury and metalloids like Arsenic and its various species (Arsenite, Arsenate, and Monothioarsenate). I am actively researching the use of Eichhornia crassipes and Arabidopsis thaliana plants in these processes. My work involves delving into the mechanisms of plant responses to stress induced by different pollutants present in ecosystems.
Simultaneously, I am passionate about science education and concentrate on enhancing critical thinking skills among undergraduate students. Additionally, I lead a program aimed at fostering interest in Science and technology fields among girls, with the goal of reducing the gender gap in Science.
