Biography

Member of the National Board of the Portuguese Association of Biologists from its creation, in April 1987, until August 1991.

President of the Board of the Institute of Zoology “Dr. Augusto Nobre” from November 1993 to March 1996.

Chairman of the Department of Zoology and Anthropology of the Faculty of Sciences of Porto from May 1996 to January 1998, and by virtue of his duties, Chairman of the Scientific Council and of the Department's Assembly, and member of the Coordinating Committee of the Scientific Council.

Director of the Natural History Museum of the Faculty of Sciences of Porto from January 2004 to March 2009.

First Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) from January 2002 to April 2004

Member of the Board and Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Parasitology from October 2005 to September 2012.

Chairman of the Department of Zoology and Anthropology in 2007 and 2008 and, by virtue of his duties, Chairman of the Scientific Committee and of the Department's Council.

Director of the General Library of the Faculty of Sciences of Porto from March 2000 to April 2003.

In October 2021, was included in the ranking “World Top 2% Scientists List”, organized by Stanford University (California, USA), which groups the 2% of scientists considered most influential worldwide.

Included in, April 2022, in the ranking prepared by “ResearchGate” for the Animal Science and Veterinary area at positions 11 and 1,703, respectively in Portugal and in the world.

Was the second author of articles published in “Systematic Parasitology” in 2005 with the highest number of citations.



Organization of Scientific Meetings, Courses and Exhibitions

Organized the First Iberian Colloquium on Ichthyopathology (Faculty of Sciences of Porto, 26 and 27 March 1985) which was attended by 55 researchers. During the meeting, 28 oral communications were presented.
