Biography

Born in Moscow, Anna Suvorova graduated from the Moscow State University in 1971. Since 1972 she has worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies (Russian Academy of Sciences), currently as the Head of the Department of Asian Literatures. A specialist in Islam in the Indian subcontinent, classical Urdu literature, the South Asian theatre and representative arts, she frequently lectures on these subjects in the Universities around the globe. Professor Suvorova is a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS), British Association for South Asian Studies (BASAS), and Centre for Study of Gender and Culture (Pakistan). Among her previous appointments is the Professor of Indo-Islamic culture at the Institute of Oriental and classical cultures (Russian State University for the Humanities) and at the Institute of Asian and African countries (Moscow State University). At present Suvorova is also the member of the Board of experts at Russian Foundation for Basic Research. In 2009 she has been conferred Sitara-i-Imtiaz by the President of Pakistan for her contribution to research of Pakistani Cultural Heritage.
