Biography
Dr. David González Gómez is a Full Professor (“Profesor Catedrático”) of Didactics of Experimental Sciences at the Faculty of Teacher Training at the University of Extremadura. He served as Dean of the Faculty for eight years, from 2016 to 2024, and currently is the Editor-in-Chief of Heliyon Education, an Elsevier-Cell Press JCR Q1 journal.
Dr. González Gómez completed his Doctorate in Chemistry at the University of Extremadura in 2005. During his doctorate, he undertook two research stays of three months each at the University of Central Florida (2004, USA) and Universidad Central de Rosario (2002, Argentina). After completing his doctorate, Dr. González Gómez joined the University of Washington as a Postdoc in the Department of Chemistry (2005-2007,USA). In 2008, he returned to Spain to work at the Research Institute of Regional Government (2008-2012) thanks to the INIA-Doc program of the Spanish Government. In 2012, Dr. González Gómez moved to the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (2012-2013, Madrid, Spain) to work as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. Finally, in 2013, he returned to Extremadura (Cáceres, Spain) to join the Department of Science and Mathematics Education, first as an Assistant Professor (2013-2016), then as an Associate Professor (2016-2019), and later as a Professor (2019-2023). He is currently a Full Professor in Science Education.
During his research career, Dr. González Gómez has published 156 research articles and book chapters, 126 of which are indexed in the Web of Science. Of these, 40 articles are within the area of Science and Mathematics Education, all included in the JCR/SJR. His research capacity can be summarized by various metrics from major research databases. According to these metrics, Dr. González Gómez holds an h-index of 32 (based on Scopus) or 31 (based on Web of Science), with a total of 3366 citations based on Scopus (2826 in the last 10 years) or 2865 citations based on Web of Science (2337 in the last 10 years). Notably, his most cited research paper (196 citations according to Scopus or 160 citations according to WoS) is about the implementation and assessment of a flipped-classroom methodology to teach science content (Journal of Science Education and Technology, 2016, 25(3), 450-459, JCR Q1).
Regarding research projects, he is currently participating in a national project (PID2020-115214RB-100) and was the principal investigator of a regional project in the field of education with a budget of 116,217.2 euros (Project IB18004 from 2019 to 2021). Throughout his research career, Dr. González Gómez has been involved in a total of 17 research grants (two of them European Grants), serving as the principal investigator in three of them. Additionally, Dr. González Gómez is the editor-in-chief of the Education Section of Heliyon, a JCR Q1 journal by Elsevier. He has supervised five doctoral theses and is currently supervising two more, expected to be defended during the first quarter of 2025.
Dr. González Gómez's research trajectory has been recognized with the Young Research Award and the Doctorate Extraordinary Award from the University of Extremadura. His teaching activity was acknowledged with the Excellent Teaching Award from the DOCENTIA-ANECA program. His research performance has been recognized with four “sexenios” (three for research and one for knowledge transfer).
