Biography

In 1999 Alexej Bubnov has received their PhD degree in Condensed Matter Physics & Materials Science from the Charles University in Prague. Since 1995 he worked as a research assistant, postdoc and researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences and, subsequently, since 2005 served as staff scientist and since 2020 as a senior staff scientist. In 2003 he was a research fellow at Trinity College of Dublin and in 2006 he was a Marie Curie research fellow in Warsaw University. He was an invited professor at Moscow State University within 2010-2013. Since 2002 Dr. Bubnov is appointed as an independent expert of European Commission serving with evaluation exercises as an expert/rapporteur/vice-chair on several hundred European projects and project proposals belonging to different Calls under FP6, FP7, H2020 and Horizon-Europe programs. Dr. Bubnov has contributed greatly to the understanding of molecular structure – mesomorphic property relationship of liquid crystalline materials possessing the self-assembling behaviour. Dr. Bubnov research expertise and activities are related to material science, soft matter physics and physical chemistry of organic self-assembling materials of various shape and functionality, in particular: functional liquid crystals (LC), LC monomers/polymers/elastomers and related subjects including nano-composites and nano-materials. His research interests are concentrated on: cell fabrication, alignment; differential scanning calorimetry; mixture formulation; mesophase characterization of new LC materials/monomers/polymers; study of spontaneous polarization; rotational viscosity, tilt angle, switching time, helix pitch, etc. by different methods; electro-optic measurements; linear and non-linear dielectric spectroscopy; small and wide angle X-ray scattering on soft materials; vibrational Raman spectroscopy; etc. Specifically he is dealing with chiral and non-chiral low molar mass materials but also with reactive mesogens and macromolecular liquid crystalline materials. He is an author and co-author of ~140 articles in referred/impacted journals. Dr. Bubnov has presented the results of their research at about 130 international conferences by ~300 invited/oral/poster presentations and has delivered about 35 invited lectures outside conferences.
