Biography

I became Full Professor of English Linguistics at the University of Bergen, Norway in 2020. I have held different teaching positions at the Universities of Limerick (Ireland), University College Dublin (Ireland), Extremadura (Spain), and Bergen (Norway). My research interests centre on the English spoken in Ireland with a more recent focus on historical sociolinguistics and corpus linguistics. I have been investigating Irish English (IrE) since 1997, and have been engaged in the analysis of historical IrE data since 2008. My work has also dealt with stylistics, discourse analysis and pragmatics. My publications include articles and chapters dealing with these topics.

I was the main investigator of the CORVIZ project, which followed up the work started in 2008 in collaboration with Professor Kevin McCafferty (University of Bergen). I have participated in numerous other research projects (at national, international and regional levels) and have been actively involved in research networks and research centers.

I am an associate member of CALS (Centre for Applied Language Studies), and IVACS (Inter-Variational Applied Corpus Linguistics network), both at the University of Limerick. She is also a member of the research groups DING (English Dialectology and the History of the English Language), University of Salamanca; Language Data and Language Change (University of Bergen) and NARNiHS (North American Research Network in Historical Sociolinguistics), which I led from 2024 to 2025. I am currently Director of LINGLAP (the Research Institute for Linguistics and Applied Language at the University of Extremadura).

My recent involvement at management level in other associations and research networks includes:

• Since 2020: member of the Executive Committee of the Irish English Network.
• Since 2021: member of the Executive Committee of EFACIS (The European Federation of Associations and Centers of Irish Studies).
• Since 2022: member of the Selection Committee for the Richard M. Hogg Prize of ISLE (International Society for the Linguistics of English).
• Since 2019: member of the NARNiHS, Steering Group and currently a member of the Executive Committee.
