Biography

Prof. Eyasu Makonnen (Orcid: 0000-0002-9259-5288) has started his academic carrier as a Graduate Assistant at the former Faculty of Medicine, Addis Ababa University (AAU) since August 1980 soon after his graduation with B. Pharm from AAU. Since then he has passed through different academic ranks till he became a full professor of Pharmacology in February 2003. He had served as Head of Department of Pharmacology and as Coordinator of Biomedical Research and Training Program, the former Faculty of Medicine, AAU for several years. He had advised and is still advising over 112 MSc and 30 PhD students. He has published over 249 peer reviewed scientific papers and books/book chapters as well as over 180 monographs/training modules. He has served as external examiner for both undergraduate and post graduate students (MSc and PhD) both in local universities and abroad. He has received several research grants from different organizations such as European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), World Bank, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), Norwegian Programme for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED), Institute of Physical and Chemical Research- Japan (RIKEN), Astra Zenica, Novartis Pharma, Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) and Vince Bi-products. He has executed and is executing over 26 research projects. He has served as a member of National Drug Advisory Committee of Ethiopia for six years. He serves as a member of editorial boards in several National and International peer reviewed journals. He is the recipient of Gold Medal award for being an outstanding student of the year 1980, School of Pharmacy, AAU; prize of KERKA Pharmaceuticals, Slovenia for his MSc thesis stood first; Gold Medal for Research and Development from the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Association; Gold Medal High Honour Laureate (Abyssinia Award); Drugs for Neglected Disease initiative (DNDi) Award for recognition as a founding member of Leishmaniasis in East Africa Platform (LEAP) and Appreciation of 20 years dedicated service to LEAP; Life Time Service Award (Medal and Certificate) from College of Health Sciences (CHS), Addis Ababa University and many others including certificates of merits/appreciation from different national and international organizations. He provides consultancy services to various institutions including the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority. He has served as member and Chairperson of the National Health Science and Technology council and National Health Research Ethics Review Committee for over 10 years. He is currently serving as a member of National Research Ethics Review Board again. He is heavily involved in offering trainings on Good Clinical Practice, Bioethics and clinical trials. He served as a chairperson and member of Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) for many multicenter clinical trials. His research focuses mainly on clinical research in particular clinical trials and phytotherapy. He is a fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Science and has served as a member of the Health Working Group of the academy. He is serving as a chair of the Advisory Committee on Clinical Trials in Ethiopia currently. He is a Deputy Head of the World Bank Supported Centre for Innovative Drug Development and Therapeutic Trials for Africa (CDT-Africa), C HS, AAU, Ethiopia on top of his routine activities in the department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, AAU.
