Biography
Dr Colin Sutherland, BSc PhD MPH
Professor of Parasitology
Deputy Director (Science): UK Malaria Reference Laboratory (2018- )
Academic lead: Wellcome Trust Human Malaria Transmission Facility, LSHTM
Dr Sutherland joined the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in 1998 as a Research Fellow to work with Prof Geoffrey Targett on the adhesion of Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes to host endothelium. Colin then coordinated a series of Wellcome Trust-funded clinical trials which measured the effect of antimalarial combination therapy on transmission of P. falciparum in Farafenni, The Gambia from 2000 to 2002. This led further to work focussed on parasite drug resistance in several African countries within the Gates Malaria Partnership from 2000 - 2008, the FP7-funded MALACTRES consortium from 2008-2013, and the EDCTP-funded WANECAM consortium from 2012 to present. Since 2004 Colin has been a key member of the UK HSA Malaria Reference Laboratory at LSHTM, with involvement in studies of the genetics/genomics of all Plasmodium species that infect humans.
The Sutherland research group in the Department of Infection Biology at LSHTM has current research interests in:
1) the genetics, genomics & epidemiology of ovale malaria
2) identification of genetic determinants of artemisinin and lumefantrine susceptibility in P. falciparum
