Biography
Jules Desmeules is emeritus professor of clinical pharmacology at the Medical Faculty and the Institute of western Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Sciences at the University of Geneva Switzerland.
He is a graduate physician since 1987, specialist in internal medicine and clinical pharmacology and toxicology since 1995. Full Professor of clinical pharmacology and toxicology (2015). He completed his post-graduate training in palliative care in London (St Christopher’s Hospice, (Dame Cecilly Sauders – 1988), and his training in pain research and neuro-physio-pharmacology in Paris, Inserm U 261 Dr JM Besson, Dr Guillbaud (1990 to 1992). He obtained an Advanced diploma in neuropharmacology, University René Descartes, Paris V Saint Anne Hospital (DEA), and he completed his clinical training in the Pain clinic of the Dpt Neurophysiology of Saint Antoine Hospital where he obtained an Inter-University post graduate diploma (DIU -Evaluation and treatment of chronic Pain (1991) (University of Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris VI).
Back to Geneva University Hospital in 1992, he obtained his Privat Docent in 1998, and Adjunct professor in 2009.
He was designeted, Head of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology in the Department of Anaesthesiology, Pharmacology, Intensive care and Emergency medicine at the University Hospitals of Geneva (2015-2022)
His research is mostly concern with precision medicine and translational research. He has study drug transportation and drug metabolism, exploring essentially the enzymes involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics such as cytochromes P450 through in vitro (microsomes, hepatic and Caco cells) or in vivo models (phenotypisation, genotypisation, pharmacokinetic, toxicogenetic and pharmacogenetic studies mostly with analgesics and cardiovascular drugs in early phase 1 and 2 studies and pharmaco-epidemiological studies. His other main research topics focus on the development of neurophysiological evaluation methods for testing the efficacy of peripheral and central analgesics (psychometric and neurophysiological-quantitative sensory testing evaluation), and screening dysfunctions in the transmission and modulation systems involved in chronic pain syndromes such as central pain sensitisation.
He was designeted Head of clinical trial unit at the Clinical Research Centre of the Geneva University Hospitals. (2007 to 2021)
He has successfully supervised PhDs, MD and pharmD and regularly publishes (>200 articles) in the top venues of pharmacology and toxicology, neurosciences, pain and internal medicine journals. He has more than 6000 citations and an h-index of 40. He has experience with project management and acquisitions private and public funds and he his research is supported by (NFS) for more for more than 20 years. His teaching involvement is substantial in pregraduate school of pharmacy and faculty of medicine. For the post graduate and continuous education.
He was the director of the Master of Advanced Study (MAS) in Toxicology of the University of Geneva School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of medicine at the University of Geneva (2010-2022), and this educational program is affiliated to the Swiss Centre for Applied Human Toxicology (SCAHT).
He was the director of a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Management of Clinical Trials and director of a Master in Drug discovery and drug development at the Faculty of medicine of the University of Geneva. 2011-2022.
