Biography
Dr Wijerathne Bohingamuwa is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology, attach to the Department of History and Archaeology. Having graduated from Banaras Hindu University, India in Archaeology (1993), Bohingamuwa moved to Deccan College in Pune, where he studied Prehistoric Archaeology for his Master’s Degree (1995). He then worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Fundamental Studies (IFS), Kandy (1995-1997). Bohingamuwa secured an MPhil Degree from the University of Cambridge, where he worked on Ancient Irrigation Systems of Sri Lanka (1998). In 2017, Bohingamuwa obtained his PhD from the University of Oxford on Sri Lanka’s Indian Ocean interactions and internal networks in pre-modern times. Between 1998 and 2002, Bohingamuwa served as a Lecturer and a visiting faculty member at the Archaeology Departments of the Universities of Buddhasravaka, Rajarata and Kelaniya, as well as at the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, Sri Lanka. In 2002, Bohingamuwa joined his present position at Ruhuna University. Major research projects he has been involved in, include the Oxford University-based Sealinks Project of Dr Nicole Boivin and Ancient Science and Technology programme headed by Prof Senake Bandaranayake and Dr Marta Prickett at the IFS. Currently, he is the Editor of the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka (Est.1845) and the Co-Secretary of the Sri Lanka Council of Archaeologists. He is an Oxford Clarendon Scholar and a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society, United Kingdom.
