Biography
Specialized in Natural Sciences in Archaeology- Cultural Heritage-Geonvironment, though during his carrier he has done research on a range of multidisciplinary fields. He has worked with the Ministry of Culture, Greece (1984-1988), The Academy of Athens, Research Center for Astronomy & Applied Mathematics (1988-1998) and during 1999-2021 was full professor of archaeometry and physical sciences at the Aegean University, Rhodes, Greece. Since 2020 he has been a distinguished professor at Henan University, Kaifeng, China.
Amongst his innovative research are surface luminescence dating, obsidian hydration dating, and contributions in interdisciplinary fields of geophysics, astronomy, archaeoastronomy, digital culture, palaeoclimatic variations, seismic periodicities, historical auroral records, Holocene climates, chronological methods in the quaternary (U-Th etc).
Elected as Membre Correspondance de l’ Academie de Sciences, Arts et Belles Lettres de Dijon (2003), Member of the European Academy of Sciences & Arts, Saltzburg (2010) and Dean of Class III (Natural Sciences) of this Academy, Honorary Professor in Samara State Academy of Culture & Arts, Russia, (2014), Guest Professor at the Samara Institute, Honorary Fellow of Edinburgh University, Honorary Professor Rhodes Uni, S.Africa; has received distinctions and Archaeometry Awards, he is cited in Wikipedia, Who’s Who in the World, Scopus, Academia.edu, Research gate and 2% top scientist and 1.3% in archaeological/historical sciences for the 2021 World list of Stanford University.
He has written 9 books (4 in English), more than 300 papers in mainly International cited journals, and mainly single or main/first author, in National Proceedings and Chapters in Books, and he has served as Editor or Co-Editor in 21 mainly international Volumes.
He has been elected as Member/ Fellow in 16 Greek and International Scientific Societies, and has carried several scientific Programmes funded by EU and Greek Ministries. He is founder of 2 International Journals (Mediterranean Archaeology & Archaeometry, www.maajournal.com &
SCIENTIFIC CULTURE, http://www.sci-cult.com/files/). He is Editor or Editor-in-Chief or Member of the Board in 30 International Journals (included in: ICI, Scopus, Scimago, Thomson Reuters, Clarivetic WoS etc). He holds several distinctions and awards.
Amongst his innovative works are the novel methods of studying antiquity and materials culture, such as nuclear dating by luminescence of monuments, the diffusion dating of obsidian tools and recently of ancient metals, novel approaches in seismicity and solar terrestrial relationships and their impact on early and contemporary societies, deciphering early Greek natural philosophy (www.liritzis.eu) liritzis@rhodes.aegean.gr; ioliritzis@gmail.com.
