|Laurel L. Haak, Executive Director. Laure drives awareness of the ORCID mission, building strategic relationships, working with a broad range of constituents, ensuring organizational persistence, and directing ORCID staff and contractors. Previously, Laure was Chief Science Officer at Discovery Logic, Inc.; a program officer for the US National Academies' Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy; and editor of Science's Next Wave Postdoc Network at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Laure received a BS and an MS in Biology from Stanford University and a PhD in Neuroscience in 1997 from Stanford University Medical School, and she was a postdoc at the US National Institutes of Health.|
|Julie Balter, Special Assistant to the Executive Director. Julie manages special projects and provides core administrative support to the executive director and senior team. Julie joined ORCID with over 20 years of experience within the nonprofit sector. She held several progressive positions with Screen Actors Guild (now SAG-AFTRA), including Regional Branch Division Administrator, where she worked closely with the board of directors and executive leadership, and served a two-year term on Florida Governor’s Film and Entertainment Advisory Commision. In recent years, Julie diversified her career path, working as a content writer, editor, and marketing coordinator for Kripalu Center of Yoga & Health.|
|Rob Blackburn, QA and API User Support Specialist. Rob works as second tier support for the ORCID API as well as running and maintaining automated tests and quality assurance processes. He previously worked as a Library Assistant at the University of Sussex, Technical support at an ecommerce provider and as a shiatsu therapist. He likes notebooks and drawing amongst many other things. He has a BA in English and Philosophy.|
|Matthew Buys, Director, Engagement. Matthew is responsible for driving ORCID sustainability through community engagement, membership, integration, and user adoption efforts following best practice. The engagement team supports our user and member communities to build ORCID as an international-scale research effort. Matthew has been with ORCID since 2015 in various roles. He came to ORCID from Thomson Reuters, where he covered the Eastern and Southern Africa region; and prior to that was Regional Sales Manager at EBSCO Information Services. He completed a BA (Psychology) and Post-Graduate Diploma in Management at the University of the Witwatersrand. In addition, Matthew has also completed courses in Java, Flash, XML, html, Perl and SQL.|
|Ana Patricia Cardoso, Engagement Lead, LATAM & US. Ana provides coaching to support technical integrations by members in the Americas and ensures that members receive excellent support in the use of the ORCID Registry. Prior to joining ORCID, Ana held several positions in financial areas for companies such as KPMG, Deutsche Bank and AXA Assistance. She also worked for IT department at Tyco-ADT. She is fluent in Spanish, English, French and is currently studying Portuguese. She has a BS in Accounting from the Universidad Panamericana in Mexico and an MBA in High Tech and Industrial Companies Management as an awarded student from Fundación Carolina at the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Spain.|
|Estelle Cheng, Manager, Asia-Pacific Engagement. Estelle is responsible for growing the adoption of ORCID, engaging with partners across sectors and establishing communities of practice in the Asia-Pacific region. Based in Taiwan, Estelle works collaboratively with the regional team to promote ORCID awareness, build strategic relationships and to support best practices of ORCID implementation across the Asia-Pacific region. Before joining ORCID, Estelle served as the product manager for digital object identifiers (DOIs) at Airiti. Estelle holds a BA in English and a MA in Linguistics from National Tsing Hua University. She has infectious enthusiasm for scholarly communication.|
|Pedro Costa, User Support Specialist. Pedro provides first tier support and his main focus is to assist our users in getting the most out of their ORCID records. He is fluent in Portuguese and English, and studied Administrative Assistance and Translation at the Porto Accounting and Business School graduating in 2013. Before joining ORCID he spent five years working for a corporate domain name management company. In his free time, Pedro practices kickboxing and rides his mountain bike.|
|Paula Demain, Engagement Lead, UK & Northern Europe. Paula is responsible for articulating and anchoring our core messaging and providing support for members in their use of the API via the ORCID help desk, as well as through documentation, training, and presentations. Previously, Paula worked for John Wiley and Sons, Ltd as Business Process and Support Manager, a global role with responsibility for the journal subscription and membership services systems and process support.|
|Tom Demeranville, Product Director. Tom ensures our technology is responsive to our community and aligned with our mission. He collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to identify innovation opportunities and manage ORCID’s technical roadmap. Tom most recently served as ORCID’s Technology Advocate, focusing on the needs of funders via the ORBIT project and working with the community via the FREYA project, which builds upon his work for the European Commission-funded THOR and ODIN projects. Before joining ORCID, Tom’s past positions included Technical Lead for the British Library and Senior Software Engineer for Eduserv, where he worked on Federated Identity Management. Tom holds a first class honors degree in software engineering from the Open University.|
Padma Gopinath, Bookkeeper. Padma supports the finance and accounting functions of ORCID by maintaining books, preparing financial reports and assisting with audits. Padma has 10 years of experience in managing accounting functions. During that period, she has worked extensively for non-profit agencies dealing with humanitarian, cultural and social causes. She has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University of Madras, India and an Honors Diploma in computer applications.
Stephanie Harley, Events Coordinator. Stephanie supports and streamlines ORCID’s international outreach, workshops, and conferences. Before joining ORCID, she was the International Program Associate at the Council of American Ambassadors. Prior to that, Stephanie served as a research analyst in governmental and political organizations. She graduated from Villanova University with honors and majored in Political Science.
|Ana Heredia, Engagement Lead, South America. Ana is responsible for driving ORCID awareness, promoting adoption and engagement, and building strategic relationships with the government, academic, and publishing communities in Latin America. Previously Ana worked with the publisher Elsevier as a research solutions consultant and a scientific journals publisher. She received a BS in Biology and an MS in Neuroscience from Université Paul Sabatier as well as a PhD in Sciences from Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), and she was a postdoc researcher at Embrapa and UECE (Brazil).|
|Sarah Hershberger, Director of Operations. Sarah manages all aspects of our back office operations including financial management, human resource management, internal information infrastructure, and coordination of international activities. Prior to joining ORCID, Sarah served as the Director of Finance & Administration for a California-based non-profit and the Business Manager for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She has focused her career on supporting mission-driven organizations and more recently she completed a short term assignment with Peace Corps Swaziland. She has her BS in Psychology from the Pennsylvania State University and received her MBA from Boston College with a concentration in operations management.|
|Liz Krznarich, Tech Lead. Liz leads ORCID's software development process. She manages tech team goals and initiatives, and ensures high-performance operations of the ORCID Registry and other key systems. Liz also serves as ORCID’s front-end developer, leading the design and construction of new user interface features. Before joining ORCID, Liz directed student technology training at the University of Wisconsin and has also worked as a reference librarian, archivist, and graphic designer. She earned a BS in Graphic Design and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin.|
|Nabil Ksibi, Engagement Lead, Middle East & Africa. Nabil is responsible for fostering ORCID community adoption in the Middle East & Africa. As part of his responsibilities, Nabil supports ORCID members as they develop new and existing integrations and workflows. Previously he worked at Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, covering the Middle East, Mediterranean, and African region. Nabil believes in the ORCID mission and seeks to build collaboration across the region. From Tunis and now based in Johannesburg, Nabil is passionate about Engineering, Art, and Humanitarian work. In addition to English, he is fluent in Arabic and French.|
|Emilia Kutrovska, Operations Project Manager. Emilia’s role is to lead projects to implement and optimize internal processes as well as to administer ORCID’s internal portfolio of information tools and systems. Before joining ORCID, Emilia managed the operations of Transformation Services and Presales departments at Pythian. Emilia comes to ORCID with experience from the high tech, not-for-profit, private, and public sectors. She has a BA in Arts from University of Ottawa and is a Certified Agile Project Manager. Emilia speaks French and Bulgarian, is currently studying Greek and is also an ESL teacher.|
|Camillia Lu, Engagement Lead, Asia-Pacific. Camillia works with the ORCID community in the Asia-Pacific region and is fluent in English, Japanese and Mandarin. Based in Taiwan, Camillia builds regional partnerships to promote adoption of ORCID and establish Communities of Practice. Prior to joining ORCID, Camillia served as the Business Development Manager for an online ticket platform and led the company to become one of the main ticket platforms in Asia. Camillia has a BA in Economics from Taiwan University and a MBA from Waseda University.|
|Alice Meadows, Director of Communications. Alice plans and manages all aspects of ORCID’s communications strategy, working with colleagues to implement it successfully across all regions and communities. She helps to increase the adoption and use of ORCID by researchers and their organizations by listening to and learning from our community, and by developing a broad range of communications to increase their awareness and understanding of ORCID and its benefits for them. Before joining ORCID, Alice served in multiple posts at John Wiley & Sons, most recently as Director of Communications. Alice earned a BSc with Honors in Anthropology from University College London.|
|Gabriela Mejias, Engagement Lead, Europe. Gabriela is responsible for developing the community adoption of ORCID. She onboards and supports institutional members as they build and upgrade their integrations and engages with the wider community delivering training and presentations. Before joining ORCID, she worked in the fields of recruiting, marketing, and operations. She has a degree in Social Communication from the University of Buenos Aires. She speaks Spanish, English, German, and French.|
|Brian Minihan, Engagement Lead, Asia-Pacific. Brian has a background in Information and Library Science and China studies, and works to ensure ORCID’s membership expansion and on-boarding continue seamlessly in the Asia Pacific region. Before joining ORCID, Brian was a Scholarly Communications and Collection Management Librarian at Hong Kong Baptist University, where he was an advocate for open scholarship in Asia. He has also been a Systems Librarian at Innovative Interfaces and a Research Associate at University of San Francisco’s Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History.|
|Angel Montenegro, Software Architect. As part of our Open Source Team, Angel is in charge of supporting existing ORCID infrastructure, helping the member services team in tech-related issues, and building new features for the ORCID registry. Angel has a BS in Computer Science from the University of Costa Rica and is fluent in Spanish and English.|
George Nash, Senior Software Developer. George joined the team in 2016 having worked as a developer across a variety of industries including finance, retail, telecoms, media, and publishing, specialising in Java development. He studied Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Sussex, graduating in 2005, and now splits his time between the UK and Barcelona. George enjoys football, films, and travelling in his spare time and plays a lot of chess. He once wrote an email based chess app and may or may not one day make it into a website.
Mitra Najafi-Gheidari, User Support Specialist. Mitra provides first tier support to researchers with queries about their ORCID records. Before joining ORCID, she worked as a support representative in the tech startup community.
Eric Olson, Engagement Lead, North America. Eric supports ORCID members as they develop new and existing integrations and workflows. Before joining ORCID, Eric worked on the PressForward publishing software at the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, where he recruited and trained research organizations to utilize PressForward and responsible scholarly communication on the web. His other projects include organizing scholarly and science communication communities, the development of curricula for the new field of history communication, and conferences on the benefits of science and humanities convergence. Eric received a BA in Communication from George Mason University and an MA in Communication from Virginia Tech.
|Julie Petro, Senior Communications Manager. Julie manages ORCID’s communications strategy across all regions and communities. A change agent with deep communications expertise in intensive research and software development settings, Julie has spent a majority of her career serving in academic earth science organizations. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Arizona State University and paints when she can find the time. She speaks conversational Korean and can often be found trail running (read: mostly walking), reading, or practicing yoga.|
Mallory Robertson, User Experience Designer. Mallory acts as a user advocate in order to provide meaningful and authentic user experiences. Through research, feedback, and testing, Mallory focuses on the entire ORCID experience, including information architecture, user interface, and usability. Prior to joining ORCID, she helped government organizations craft digital experiences through UX research and design. She has a degree in Graphic Design and is UX certified through Nielsen Norman Group. When she is not working, Mallory can be found practicing yoga or playing ukulele.
Shawna Sadler, Engagement Manager, Americas. Shawna is responsible for developing the ORCID community in the Americas and managing the regional Americas team: North, Central, and South America. Based in Canada, Shawna focuses on continuing the adoption and integration of ORCID within the research communities and organizations of the Americas. Shawna joined ORCID in 2019 with a long history of introducing ORCID to research communities and implementing ORCID in research management systems. Shawna has worked at universities in Canada and Australia, and in her spare time she can be found snowboarding, mountain biking, and trying to keep up with her quickly growing children.
|Bernette Sherman, Member Communications and Outreach Specialist. In this role Bernette supports and engages with the ORCID community and members in the United States and Canada. Prior to joining ORCID, Bernette spent more than 12 years in community and public health, including several years conducting applied research at organizations such as Georgia State University’s Georgia Health Policy Center, Emory University, and Kaiser Permanente. Bernette holds an MPA in Policy Analysis and Evaluation and a BBA in Management from Georgia State University. Most recently she’s been busy as a writer, with published works of fiction, inspiration, poetry, and even music. In her spare time she continues to write, publish, perform, and enjoy her family. She has two children and speaks some conversational Spanish.|
|Will Simpson, Director, Technology. Will is responsible for ORCID’s technical strategy, infrastructure, and scalability, and manages the technology team. WIll was a software consultant on the pre-launch team, joined the ORCID technology team after launch, and served as tech lead before his current role. Previously, he worked as a developer for John Wiley & Sons Ltd specializing in content management systems. While at Semantico Ltd, he helped to create DawsonEra, the largest supplier of electronic books to academic libraries in the United Kingdom. Will graduated in 2000 with a first class honors degree in Physics from University College London, and is also a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language.|
|Catalina Wilmers, Lead, Researcher Services and Quality Assurance. Catalina leads the Research Services team, helping ORCID users with support queries, data fixes and good UI. She also leads Quality Assumarnce developing and manages test plans and testing automation and is the go-to person for escalated (Tier 2) API support issues. Before joining ORCID, Catalina worked as an academic librarian and archivist, where she enjoyed digitizing all sorts of things. In her free time she travels the world and reads B-list classical novels. Catalina earned a BA in History and Masters in Information Science from the University of Michigan.|
|Ivo Wijnbergen, Manager, EMEA Engagement. Ivo is responsible for managing the regional EMEA Engagement team and developing the ORCID community of members in the wider European region. Based in the Netherlands, Ivo focuses on growing ORCID within the international research community and building relationships with key organizations. Ivo joined ORCID in May 2018, from Microsoft, where he was responsible for Data Insights for the Northern Europe region, and previously worked for Yahoo! managing the DACH region clients and cross-functional projects with the Data Science team. Ivo speaks Dutch, German, English, and Spanish. His spare time is usually seized by his two young daughters and an ongoing Executive MBA.|
