Biography

Dr. Gertrud M. Ayerle is a midwife and researcher at the Institute of Health and Nursing Science of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg where she has been employed since 2004.
In 2009 she completed her doctoral thesis on wellbeing in pregnancy. She teaches in the University’s bachelor’s and master’s programme (health and nursing science) and has coordinated research projects addressing health care provision and expert support by family midwives; the identification of experiences, needs and wishes of women regarding midwifery care in Germany; as well as the identification of relevant topics for future midwifery research in Germany.
Presently, she coordinates the multicentre trial „Be-Up: Geburt aktiv“ which in the clinical setting studies the effect of an alternative birthing room on the vaginal birth rate and other women-oriented outcomes (www.be-up-studie.de).
In the past, Gertrud M. Ayerle had run a basic health promotion project in Nairobi, Kenya, before she graduated (B.Sc., MSc.) at Catholic University in Washington (DC), USA. She was a board member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hebammenwissenschaft e.V. (German Society of Midwifery Science) from 2008 to 2018, and continues to be an active member.
