Biography
I received a Bachelor of Arts from National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway, a first class honours Higher Diploma in Psychology from University College Cork and a PhD from NUI Maynooth (NUIM). Having completed my PhD, I spent one further year at NUIM conducting postdoctoral research and I was appointed as a member of faculty at the School of Psychology at NUI Galway in August, 2002.
My training is in behavioral psychology, with a specific focus on Relational Frame Theory (RFT), a modern behavioral approach to language and cognition. Over the last decade my research has involved training and assessing various forms of relational responding, which RFT sees as underlying language and intellectual ability more broadly, in a range of age groups. My work has involved assessing and training basic relations (e.g., equivalence, distinction, opposition and comparison) as well as modelling and investigating more complex patterns of relational behaviour including analogy, perspective-taking and categorization, in both children and adults, and in both clinical and non-clinical populations. My research has been published in respected international peer reviewed journals. I currently have a SCOPUS h-index of 13 and a Google Scholar h-index of 23, indicating the influence of my work. Furthermore, I’ve endeavored to disseminate my research widely. I’ve presented over 100 papers at national and international conferences over the last decade and a half.
I’m a member of several associations dedicated to promotion of behavioural science including the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS), the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI), the European Association for Behaviour Analysis (EABA) and the Experimental Analysis of Behaviour Group (EABG). In addition, I’m currently on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed international journals in my area of research including the European Journal of Behavior Analysis, the Analysis of Verbal Behaviour, The Psychological Record and the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Science.
Finally, I have also been an active member of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). I sat on the executive council of the PSI from 2004 until 2008 and was Honorary Secretary from 2005 until 2007.
