Biography

DR. HUSSAIN (Prof. of Chemistry) is among the founding faculty members of Syed Babar Ali School of Science & Engineering (SBASSE) and has played a key role to develop and lead the development of Chemistry Department at Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). He has led the Chemistry department during its formative years (2010-2016) at SBASSE that has emerged as the most prominent school in the region to bring a paradigm shift in Science & Engineering Education. Approx. 40% of SBASSE graduating BS students are offered fully funded graduate admission offers from the world best institutions including Harvard, MIT, UC Berkeley, Princeton, Yale, Chicago, Cornell, Rice, Cambridge, Oxford, UIUC and CMU etc., a phenomenon not much common in Pakistan before, and this ratio is ~100 % for Chemistry majors interested for higher studies. Prior to joining LUMS, Dr. Hussain spearheaded research and development program in Nanobiotechnology at National Institute for Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (NIBGE), Faisalabad, and developed a Nanotech group/facility that is now one among the few most productive Nanotech groups in Pakistan. He has published over 150 research articles in prominent journals including Nat Mater, Science Advances, Nature Communications, Angew Chem Int Edit, Adv Mater, J Am Chem Soc, Adv Science, Small, ACS-AMI, ACS-AEM, ChemSusChem, Macromolecules, Chem Commun, Langmuir and Nanoscale etc. Dr. Hussain has developed several effective research collaborations with the leading nanomaterials groups in USA, Europe, China, Saudi Arabia (KAUST) and several National Institutions in Pakistan. He had visiting faculty/researcher positions at various foreign universities including UMass, Amherst (USA), EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland) and KAUST (Saudi Arabia). He has got several competitive National/International research grants to explore the applications of metal nanoparticles/nanoclusters in biomedical sciences, renewable energy technologies, water and environment. Dr. Hussain has also served as the Chair of National Nanotech Experts Panel at Pakistan Council for Science & Technology and was awarded Gold Medals in Chemistry by Pakistan Academy of Sciences in 2007 & 2014. In 2016, Dr. Hussain got a Charles Wallace Fellowship in 2016 to visit the University Of Cambridge, UK, to further develop and strengthen international linkages. During 2020-22, he has also been the member of the National Core Group of Chemistry and Chair of the National Core Group of Nanotechnology formed by the PM Task Force on Science & Technology.

Dr. Hussain is a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Fellow of Pakistan Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of International Engineering Institute.
