Biography
José Luis Quero Pérez (ID: orcid.org/0000-0001-5553-506X) has a BSc in Biology from the University of Cordoba (1996-2002) and a PhD in Forest Ecology from the University of Granada (2003-2007).
With the aim of studying forests from a multidisciplinary perspective, he has gradually trained in the areas of forest ecophysiology and demography, plant community dynamics, and biogeochemical cycles. He has also developed a strong experimental (field and laboratory) and modeling background, thanks to his work at seven national and international research centers.
After completing his PhD at the University of Granada, focusing on the regeneration of forest species in the Sierra Nevada National Park, he received a postdoctoral fellowship from the Ministry of Education and Science to carry out his postdoctoral project at Wageningen University, an international reference in agronomy and forest sciences. After two years of postdoctoral training abroad (2008-2009), he returned to the national research system through a research contract funded by the European Research Council (2010-2012), in the "Semiarid Ecology and Global Change Lab" at Rey Juan Carlos University, where he connected his ecophysiology knowledge with soil biogeochemical processes.
For 17 years (2007-2024), he has combined his research activity with teaching at most of the centers where he has worked, which allowed him to obtain a position as Full Professor at the University of Cordoba. He teaches in one Bachelor's degree and four Master's programs. He is a regular reviewer for over 25 scientific journals and a project evaluator for AEI, SEPIE, Xunta de Galicia, Biodiversa+, and H2020. He has participated in over 40 competitive research projects, some of them international. Additionally, he is the coordinator of an EU-LAC international project and has been the principal investigator of two MINECO projects, one Infrastructure project, and two projects from Junta de Andalucia (> 2M € as PI).
In terms of teaching, he has supervised 2 doctoral theses, 3 in progress, 26 master's theses, and 15 bachelor's theses. In the latest DOCENTIA Teaching Activity Evaluation Report from the University of Cordoba, he received an Excellent rating (93.89 points out of 100). In terms of management, he has been Coordinator of the Bachelor's Degree in Forest Engineering for 4 years and is the General Director of International Projects since July 2022. He is also Scientific Director of The Royal Botanical Garden of Cordoba.
