Biography
M Yusuf Ali took his Graduation and Master degrees in Agriculture from Bangladesh Agricultural University in 1981 and 1983 and did his Ph.D. in Agronomy in 2000 from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University with dissertation research from International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). He joined On-Farm Research Division (OFRD) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute in 1983 and served up to 2009. During his whole career in OFRD he was a practitioner of Farming Systems across Bangladesh and served as Coordinator of different Farming Systems Research & Development sites. As Principle Scientist of OFRD, HQ, Gazipur he played a vital role in respect of overall planning, execution, and supervision and monitoring of the research, development and technology transfer activities of the Division. He was trained from IRRI, Philippines on Adaptive Research with a Farming Systems Research Approach. He also acted as Principal Investigator in different donor funded projects including FAO funded Livelihoods Adaptation to Climate Change, CIMMYT funded Maize whole Family Training and Adaptive Research and SDC funded Homestead Agroforestry. In 2007 he worked as Visiting Scientist of CIMMYT, Mexico through World Bank scholarship (IFAR Fellowship) and characterized the Rice-Maize Systems of Bangladesh latter on which was published from CIMMYT entitled “Maize-Rice cropping systems in Bangladesh: status and research opportunities”. He served as short term consultant for Australian Center for International Agricultural Research and International Food Policy Research Institute. From 2012 to 2014 he worked as a Cropping Systems Agronomist of CIMMYT and promoted conservation agriculture, axial flow pump for surface water irrigation and intensification of Rice-Fallow systems of South-Central Bangladesh. From January 2015 to December 2016 he served as a Focal Regional Research Manager of CGIAR funded Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) Program under IWMI/WorldFish. He served as the Focal point of five diverse mega research projects across the Ganges river basin of Bangladesh, India and Nepal. From January to March 2017 he worked as Consultant of CIAT, Colombia for profiling the Climate Smart Agriculture of Bangladesh. He worked as short term consultant of WorldFish, Bangladesh in 2017 for its CGIAR funded Climate change, Agriculture and Food security program (CCAFS) for studying “Adapting with climate change through establishing climate-smart village in southern coastal Bangladesh”. Currently he is drafting research book on “Evolution of Agriculture in
the High Barind Tract of Bangladesh: Water use, food security, climate change and livelihoods” with Dr Chris Johansen of University of Western Australia. He possesses 34 journal articles in renowned international and national journals and has many other publications including books, poster, pamphlet, popular articles, and technology booklet.
