Biography

I am an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences at the University of Oxford. My research is based in South Africa and the UK, and focussed on management of infectious diseases in primary care. In Oxford I work in the Acute Infections team and the NIHR Community Healthcare MedTech and IVD Cooperative, led by Prof Chris Butler and Prof Gail Hayward. I am also an Honorary Associate Scientist at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), where I work with Prof Nigel Garrett.

At CAPRISA, I am running the POwER and PHILA studies, exploring whether point-of-care viral load testing can improve HIV services in primary care clinics in South Africa. I am also a co-investigator on the US NIH funded STREAM-HIV trial, a randomised controlled trial of point-of-care HIV viral load and tenofovir adherence testing in Durban, South Africa. I am co-PI on the SHAPE study; a collaboration with South African primary care services which uses de-identified routine data to evaluate the HIV/TB programme.

I am heavily involved in COVID-19 research. I am a co-investigator and trial management group member for the PANORAMIC and PRINCIPLE trials, the UK national platform adaptive trials of antivirals and repurposed medications to treat COVID-19 in the community. I am also co-principal investigator of the AIDAH study, a collaboration with the eThekwini (Durban) Municipality Health Unit, using routine data and qualitative methods to assess implementation of COVID-19 adaptations to differentiated HIV services in primary care clinics in eThekwini.

I previously worked at CAPRISA as a Research Clinician and Project Manager. I completed UK General Practice (Family Medicine) specialty training through placements in the London Deanery, UK and Bethesda Hospital, South Africa, before doing the MSc in Public Health in Developing Countries at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and then a DPhil in Primary Care at the University of Oxford.

I have been supported by funding from Wellcome, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the UK Global Challenges Research Fund and the National Institute of Health and Social Care Research (NIHR).
