Manuel Lemos de Sousa is Professor and Director of CIAGEB RDID&D unit at the Faculty of Science and Technology, University Fernando Pessoa, Porto, Portugal. He graduated in Geology (1965) and obtained his PhD (1975) and DrSc (1977) degrees at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal. He studied Organic Petrology and Geochemistry in France, Belgium and Germany. In the period 1971-2009 he was full and honorary member of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology-ICCP, and ICCP President in the period 1995-1999. He develops activities in diverse committees of the European Union (Brussels), United Nations ECE (Geneva), and the European Academies Science Advisory Council – EASAC. He is member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, the Royal Academy of Sciences of Madrid, and of the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (Paris). His main research domains are Carboniferous stratigraphy, Organic Petrology and Geochemistry, and CO2 geological storage.
