Biography
Prof. Jiafu Ji is a world-renowned surgeon and scientist in gastrointestinal oncology, an experienced healthcare administrator, and a leading figure in cancer prevention and control. His team has pioneered studies related to D2 lymphadenectomy, laparoscopic gastrectomy, perioperative neoadjuvant therapy, precision diagnosis with AI, etc., and successfully translated the findings into advancements in clinical practice, leading to a substantial improvement in patient survival rate and quality of life in China and across the world. He is also committed to standardizing gastrectomy, and his training programs have benefited over ten thousand surgeons. Prof. Jiafu Ji was the first Chinese to serve as President of the International Society of Gastric Cancer. During his tenure, he promoted equity in treating gastric cancer worldwide, especially in less developed countries and regions. He is in the vanguard of constructing the biggest gastric cancer biobank worldwide and China's most extensive clinical database while implementing innovative analytical and computational tools to improve monitoring, collaborative research, and healthcare. Under his and his predecessor’s leadership, Peking University Cancer Hospital conducted the world’s largest, decades-long interventional field study of 200,000 population, unveiling various environmental and lifestyle risk factors of gastric cancer and providing valuable evidence for global cancer control policymaking. With the vision of delivering the best cancer care through collaborative learning and partnership, Ji led the establishment of the China Precision Cancer Care Consortium, where the top-tier cancer hospitals work together in cancer research and training, and the National Surgical Quality Initiative, covering over 350,000 patients in China. Prof. Ji has published over 400 research papers as the first or corresponding author, including 290 papers in SCI journals, such as Science, JAMA, Lancet, Cell, Nature Medicine, Lancet Oncol, Science Transl Med, etc. His team won second prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award (2017) for outstanding contribution to gastric cancer prevention and control across China.
