Biography

Prof Noakes obtained an MBChB degree and an MD and DSc (Med) in Exercise Science from the University of Cape Town (UCT). In 1995 he co-found the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA). He is an NRF A1-rated scientist and has received the Order of Mapungubwe, Silver, from the President of South Africa for his “excellent contribution in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise”. He is now an Emeritus Professor at UCT. At age 69 he is still physically active, running regularly and doing Crossfit twice a week.

Prof Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles and won numerous awards over the years. His book “Lore of Running” is in its 4th edition and won the UCT Book Award. Since 2012 he has published another 7 books, most recently “Lore of Nutrition”, currently being published overseas as “Real Foods on Trial”.

Following the publication of “The Real Meal Revolution” he founded The Noakes Foundation and now devotes a majority of his time to promoting the low carbohydrate, high fat diet and to raising funds for related research.
