Biography

Dr Niels Lohse is a full Professor of Manufacturing Automation and Robotics at the University of Birmingham, UK. Previously, he was the director of the Intelligent Automation Centre at Loughborough University, UK until 03/2024. He graduated with a first class Dipl.-Ing. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Applied Science Hamburg, Germany in 2000. Dr Lohse obtained his MSc in Technology Management from the University of Portsmouth in 2001 and received his PhD in Manufacturing Engineering and Operations Management from the University of Nottingham in 2006.
Dr Lohse was a lecture in Advanced Manufacturing Technology at the University of Nottingham from 2006 until 2013. He joint the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University as senior lecturer in 2014 where he teaches Automation and Robotics.
His research is focused on intelligent automation including human-robot collaboration, autonomous industrial robots, skill-based automation, manufacturing system modelling, distributed control, diagnostics and design decision-support with a primary focus on modular and evolvable production systems, cyber-physical systems and applications of artificial intelligence techniques in manufacturing.
Dr Lohse is a member of the IEEE IES Technical Committee on Industrial Agents and the IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Intelligent Industrial Systems (Society Member since 2013). He actively contribution to the IEEE P2660.1 Working Group - Recommended Practices on Industrial Agents: Integration of Software Agents and Low Level Automation Functions.
