Biography
Dr Sarentha Chetty is a lecturer in pharmacology in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology at the University of Witwatersrand and is an honorary research fellow at the University of KwaZulu Natal. She has worked as a community and hospital clinical pharmacist in the UK and South Africa. She has also worked as a clinical trials pharmacist at CAPRISA. She has served as an executive member on the KwaZulu Natal Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) committee.
Dr Chetty obtained her BPharm from Rhodes University, MSc in molecular biology of infectious diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical medicine, and her PhD from the University of Nottingham. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in medicinal and computational chemistry at the University of Nottingham and the University of KwaZulu Natal.
Dr Chetty is involved in postgraduate supervision of honors, masters and PhD students. Her research is in medicinal chemistry, clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice with a focus on infectious diseases in particular HIV, TB, bacterial and fungal infections. She is interested in improving rational medicine use through antimicrobial stewardship and health promotion, whilst improving and strengthening health systems within hospitals and community pharmacies to provide better services and clinical outcomes for patients. She is also interested in the scholarship of teaching and learning and carrying out research into innovative educational methods to promote learning within the health sciences. Dr Chetty’s research is multidisciplinary and she has collaborations with other universities, and colleagues in the NHLS as well as the National Department of Health.
