Biography
Dr. Garyfallia Katsavounidou is an associate professor of Urban Design and Planning at the Department of Spatial Planning and Development, School of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh). Diploma in Architecture (AUTh), MSc in Architecture and Urbanism (Department of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), PhD (Department of Architecture, University of Thessaly). Her teaching includes courses in urban design, urban history, social and anthropological approaches of urban space and sustainable and resilient urban development. Her research interests include human-centered urbanism, participatory planning, and children’s independent mobility.
Her books include: Invisible Parentheses: 27 cities in Thessaloniki (Patakis, 2004); Child, City and Design: The Spielraum (Kritiki, 2023), The City at Human Scale (Kallipos, 2023). She translated and edited (with P. Tarani) the Greek edition of Jan Gehl’s classic book Life between buildings: Using Public Space (University of Thessaly Press, 2013).
