Biography

Dr. David S. Hurwitz is a professor of transportation engineering, director of the Driving and Bicycling Research Laboratory and the Kiewit Center for Infrastructure and Transportation Research in the School of Civil and Construction Engineering at Oregon State University. David conducts research in the areas of transportation human factors, transportation safety, traffic control devices, and transportation engineering education. In particular, Dr. Hurwitz is interested in the consideration of user behavior in the design, evaluation, and innovation of transportation systems. David teaches graduate and undergraduate classes covering topics such as; Highway Engineering, Traffic Operations, Signalized Intersections, and Driving Simulation and his teaching has been nationally recognized. David's research has been supported by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAA FTS), Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) Toyota, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust, National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), The Pacific NW Transportation Consortium (PacTrans), the Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC), the City of Portland, and Washington County. Additionally, Dr. Hurwitz currently serves as the Chair of the Transportation Research Board’s Measurement and Evaluation of User Behavior (ACH50), and as the immediate past Chair of the Institute of Transportation Engineer’s Education Council.
