Biography
Paweł Wityk, PhD, Eng. is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Biopharmacy and Pharmacokinetics, Medical University of Gdańsk. Additionally, he is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Chemistry, Department of Molecular Biotechnology and Microbiology, Gdańsk University of Technology, and a member of the Discipline Council for Biomedical Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology. He is also a visiting scientist at the Beckman Institute - University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Wityk has gained scientific experience in theoretical studies, chemistry, radiochemistry, photochemistry, and experimental methods in biology/biotechnology at Polish and international universities. He is the owner and CEO of the biotechnology company Map Your DNA Ltd. which provides R&D services for businesses. He is a member of the Metabolomics Scientific Circle, the supervisor of the scientific circle at the Department of Biopharmacy and Pharmacokinetics at the Medical University of Gdańsk, a Key Opinion Leader for QIAGEN, and the Science Communication Coordinator for COST Action CA21159, where he previously served as deputy coordinator. Dr. Wityk has also received the prestigious NAWA Becker scholarship, which led to his employment as a research scholar at the Beckman Institute, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, USA.
Dr. Wityk has served as the principal investigator or a co-investigator in research projects funded by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (Diamond Grant, Science for Society), the National Science Centre (Etiuda, OPUS, Maestro), and the National Centre for Research and Development (Strategmed, ePionier, Fast Track), as well as in programs like PO IR (Proto-lab) and Argentum under IDUB. He has secured funding from MEiN (16.7 million PLN, ~$4mln) to establish BioMed Lab - a core facility at Gdańsk University of Technology - and co-participated in securing funds for creating the Integrated Proteomics Analysis System and the Imaging Platform for Medical Data Digitization at the Medical University of Gdańsk (18.6 million PLN, ~$4mln).
Moreover, Dr. Wityk has led R&D projects commissioned by companies such as Excento Sp. z o.o. (8thSense screening platform), Grupa O2 Marcin Wróblewski (a sterilization device for surfaces and air), Halloy Nano Polska Ltd. (microbiological testing of antimicrobial coatings for various fabrics), Wernel Kenkel Ltd. (development of antimicrobial coatings for industrial cardboard packaging), MPL Techma Ltd. (development of a disinfection chamber for cardboard packaging), GeneMe Ltd. (validation of diagnostic tests using LAMP and PCR technologies), and SensDx SA (validation of genetic tests and electrochemical sensors for respiratory infection diagnostics). For Eastern Chem Groups Ltd., he developed unique formulas for car window cleaning solutions capable of filling scratches on glass. His managerial skills, supported by certifications (PRINCE 2.0, MoR, P3O, R&D specialist), are further enhanced by his qualifications as an internal auditor for ISO 14385, ISO 17025 and ICH E6 (R2) GCP standards.
Dr. Wityk conducts research in the following areas: (i) metabolomics and proteomics analysis, (ii) DNA radio- and photosensitization processes, and (iii) diagnostic tests/biosensors. Currently, he is engaged in R&D work in the fields of biomedical engineering and biotechnology, including optoelectronic sensors, electrochemical sensors, medical devices, metabolomics and proteomics, and imaging methods, with a strong focus on radiation-matter interactions. His research seamlessly aligns with the fields of chemical sciences and biomedical engineering, as well as Poland's Smart Specialization Strategy. Furthermore, his work meets the needs of businesses, as evidenced by his extensive collaboration with commercial entities. Dr. Wityk demonstrates a high level of scientific research and effectively translates knowledge from basic research into commercialization while maintaining its interdisciplinary character. His academic contributions also include hosting international biomedical engineering conference sessions (ICNMS, Singapore 2023, and OPTO 2023) and presenting at the OPTI GEN SANITAS conference on environmental pollution.
