Biography
Jaime Mata-Falcón is assistant Professor at the Civil Engineering School of the Polytechnic University of Valencia since September 2023. Previously he was a senior researcher and lecturer at the Chair of Concrete Structures and Bridge Design of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, where he joined as a postdoctoral researcher in 2015. After he had worked for two years as a structural engineer, he completed in 2009 his master’s degree in civil engineering at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain. He then specialized himself with a master’s degree in concrete engineering. In 2015, he obtained his doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Valencia with a dissertation on the crack behaviour of dapped-end concrete beams. During his doctorate, Jaime worked for more than one year in the Structural Concrete Laboratory at EPF Lausanne on the domain of Elastic-Plastic Stress Fields. In April 2016, Jaime Mata-Falcón joined the NCCR Digital Fabrication, a multidisciplinary research initiative to improve the sustainability of construction by combining digital technologies and physical building processes.
Jaime Mata-Falcón has participated as project manager in numerous research projects (national, European and together with multinational companies such as SIKA, PERI, KNAUF and IDEA STATICA). His research aims at fostering sustainability in construction by developing material-efficient structural systems and suitable approaches to design them. This research comprises three developments: a) mechanical models suitable for complex geometries and new materials, b) refined distributed measuring technologies to gain insights into the behaviour of new materials and structural systems, and c) efficient structural systems using digital fabrication technologies.
