Biography
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
My academic background includes the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and the Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery (Cum Laudem) from the University of Cantabria (UNICAN). In addition, I obtained a Master in Direction and Management of Health Services at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Cantabria. I carried out the training of internal physician in Clinical Neurophysiology at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital (HUMV) and completed my training in pre-surgical evaluation of patients with refractory epilepsy, with a scholarship for the expansion of my studies for 2 years, at King's College Hospital in London under the direction of Prof Colin D. Binnie. In 2013, I did a formative stay in basic research at the Laboratory of Brain Circuits of the Cajal Institute of Madrid (CSIC) directed by Dra. Liset Menéndez de la Prida.
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
My research experience is large and I am the author of 90 scientific articles (Pubmed) in different areas of the specialty of Clinical Neurophysiology and author of 6 book chapters. I have been responsible since 2009 of the clinical group of research in Neurosciences denominated group of Neurophysiology in Epilepsy and Neurointensive in the Biomedical Research Institute (IDIVAL). I am an expert reviewer for JCR's, including Lancet Neurology, Nature Reviews Neurology, Brain, Neurology, Epilepsy, Seizure, JNNP, Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology, Clinical EEG and Neuroscience, BCM Neurology, Bipolar Disorders, Epileptic Disorders and others. I have acted as an expert evaluator for the National Agency for Evaluation and Prospective (ANEP) and British association Epilepsy Research UK. I have obtained the title of training in protection and animal experimentation for researchers in Biomedical Sciences (category C). I have been a guest speaker at more than 60 congresses and scientific courses. In 2016, I was a finalist of the Idea2Global program developed by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston (USA), thanks to the project titled "Transcortical micro-recording in human with biocompatible probes of SU8”.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience is intense. I am associate Clinical Professor of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine of Santander and School of Physiotherapy, imparting the theoretical and practical lessons corresponding to the subject of Physiology of the Nervous System from 2009 to the present. In addition, I also teach in the subjects of Neurological Pathophysiology and Neurodynamics in 4th year of Physiotherapy in the Mention of Neurology. Of note, I am a guest Professor in 5 different Masters and one Course of Specialization at the Universities of Oviedo, Barcelona and Cantabria. I have been tutor of resident physicians from 2003 to 2007 and received the Best Tutor Award in 2005. I have been director of 6 national and international courses of Electroencephalography.
EXPERIENCE IN MANAGEMENT
At present, I am the Head of the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology of HUMV and President of the National Commission of Clinical Neurophysiology. For 4 years, I have been Secretary of the Commission for Technology and Adaptation of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Methods at the HUMV.
