Biography

Carlo Cecati (IEEE Life Fellow, class 2006) was born in Lanciano, Italy, on December 26th, 1957.

He graduated in 1983, the same year he joined the University of L’Aquila. Since 2006 he has been a Professor of Converters, Electrical Machines, and Drives. From 2005 up to Sept. 30, 2013, he has been the Rector’s delegate in charge of those programs in partnership with the Regione Abruzzo government.

His research and technical interests fall in the area of renewable energies and of energy saving, in particular applications of power electronics to renewable energy, distributed generation, smart grids, industrial drives, electric vehicles and aircraft, and, with emphasis on control, modulation techniques, fault diagnosis, and in microprocessor applications and industrial networks. He authored over 250 papers in these fields in the most prestigious international journals and conference proceedings. He was a co-recipient of the Best IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics Paper Award (in 2012 and 2013), the IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine Best Paper Award (in 2012) and the Outstanding Paper Award of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics (in 2020).

In 2014 he was invited as a Guest Professor at the Harbin Institute of Technology, P.R. China. From August 2014 to August 2015, He has been the Chief International Academic Adviser at the same University, and from September 2015 till September 2017, He has been a High-Level Foreign Expert (Distinguished Professor of H.I.T.), under the frame of the "1000 Talents Program" of the P.R. China.

From 2013-2015 he has been the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics. Previously, He has been a Co-Editor-in-Chief (2009-2012) and an Associate Editor (2004-2018) of the same journal. Since 2020 he has been associate editor of the journals: IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics and IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification. He has been a Guest Editor of several Special Sections of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification, IEEE Access, and Springer Journal of Ambient Intelligence & Humanized Computing. From 2006 to 2008 he has been an Editor of IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics.

He has served as a reviewer for the most important international journals and conferences in the field of power electronics and drives and their control. He has been and is a member of Technical Committees in almost all the most important conferences organized in the field of industrial electronics, being General Chairman, Technical Program Chairman, Honorary Chairman, Track Chairman, Special Sessions Chairman, and Tutorial Chairman. He has been an Invited Speaker or a Tutorial Speaker at several universities and conferences in the USA, Canada, France, the U.K., Korea, Denmark, Spain, Qatar, China, Poland, Angola, Turkey, Romania, Malaysia, Iran, and Italy.

Since 1990 he has been an active member of the IEEE Industrial Electronics, IEEE Industry Applications, IEEE Power Electronics, and IEEE Control Systems.

Carlo Cecati has been or is a consultant or an advisor for Universities and Utility companies, in research projects in the field of distributed generation and smart grids. He has been an evaluator of research projects for several national and international institutions and an evaluator or a referee for numerous foreign universities in promotions to assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor rank and in electrical degree course accreditation.

Since 2007 Carlo Cecati has been a Co-Founder of DigiPower Ltd., a University of L’Aquila spin-off (since 2019 Innovative SME) active in industrial electronics and informatics, modelling, electromagnetic analysis, and compatibility, being C.E.O. until 2012. Now he is the Principal Scientist and Technical Director.

Carlo Cecati was awarded by the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society with the Anthony J. Hornfeck Service Award in 2017 and with the Dr.-Ing. Eugene Mittelmann Achievement Award in 2021.

Carlo Cecati was awarded by the President of the Republic of Italy with the title "Commander" of the Republic of Italy in 2019.

He is a registered engineer in Italy since 1984.
