Biography

José A. Jiménez earned a PhD in Applied Chemistry (Materials/Physical) in 2009 at the University of Puerto Rico (Mayagüez, PR), focusing on optical properties of noble metal and rare-earth doped glasses. Following a post-doctoral appointment in the Physics Department at New College of Florida (Sarasota, FL) working further on glasses and thin film processing, in 2011 he joined the Department of Chemistry at University of North Florida (Jacksonville, FL) as Assistant Professor of Physical Chemistry. In June 2015, he joined BASF Corporation as materials scientist specializing in amorphous materials focusing on glass developments for solar cells, thus becoming part of the team of the Functional Films Lab in Union, NJ. At BASF, Dr. Jiménez also worked on the development of atomic layer deposition (ALD) methods and inorganic coatings for a wide range of applications such as cathode powders for Li-ion batteries, magnetic powders, pigments, and chemical/environmental catalysts. In August 2019 he joined the Department of Chemistry & Physics at Augusta University (Augusta, GA) and was recipient in 2021 of the Visiting Faculty Program award at the Savannah River National Lab (SRNL) to engage on the characterization and study of gamma radiation effects on borosilicate nuclear waste glass simulants. Dr. Jiménez is currently at the Department of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Physics at Georgia Southern University (Statesboro, GA), and his continued interest in glass science, thin films, and optical materials research has led to over 130 articles published in peer-reviewed journals and several patent applications. Dr. Jiménez was ranked in 2024 among the world's top 2% of scientists by Elsevier and Stanford University. He currently serves as Editorial Board Member for the open-access journals Scientific Reports (Physical Chemistry Division) from the Springer-Nature publishing group and Applied Sciences (Materials Section) from the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). He has also acted as reviewer for more than 50 journals and continues to provide such service to the scientific community in his field.
